Kindergarten Technology Activities

Technological activities aren't just for the older students; kindergarten students can learn to do them, too. In fact, kindergartners can learn to read, write, draw and paint through online technology activities. Some computer programs, such as Microsoft Word and Microsoft Paint, enable teachers to facilitate creative activities yet reduce costs associated with pen and paper or crayons and paint.
  1. Online Games

    • Teach kindergarten-aged children technology basics like moving a computer mouse and clicking it through free educational games on the internet at kinderwebgames.com. These simple games require children to use the computer mouse when selecting their answer in multiple-choice games. Show your student how to hold and move the mouse on the mouse pad -- and to use her index finger to click to select the answer she chooses in the game being played.

Your students will have fun playing the simple ABC, 123 or animal match games available and also be preparing for the next step in their technological education. Kinderweb also offers games that help children learn to tell time, count currency and do math problems through visual learning.

    Click-and-Drag Computer Activity

    • Show kindergartners how objects are sometimes moved on a computer through free click-and-drag technology activities available at meddybemps.com. This simple and fun online technology activity includes these visual items: doghouse, dog, cat, two birds and a dog water dish. Ask the student to move his mouse to the dog and to click on it and hold down the mouse clicker as he moves the dog toward the water dish. Tell him to release the clicker on the mouse as soon as the dog's face is sitting atop the water dish. You may need to have the student place his hand over yours as you show, by example, the first time he attempts this activity.

    Learning Keyboard Letters

    • Aid your student in learning about each keyboard letter's placement by having her practice touching each letter of the alphabet -- from A to Z -- on her keyboard while in a word-processing document you open. Have her practice this over and over until she becomes familiar with the correct sequence of letters alphabetically and with each letter's placement on the keyboard. Model the proper hand placement and how to use the "Shift" key to make uppercase letters. Introduce your students to literacycenter.net for technology-assisted practice on typing uppercase letters on their keyboard in the "Play and Learn" keyboard option on the site.

    Art without Spills

    • Kindergarten students typically learn to paint and draw in the classroom using crayons, pencils and paints on the canvas of paper or coloring-book pages. But computer technology enables you to avoid those messy and expensive costs through programs such as the Microsoft Paint. Teach your kindergarten students how to access the pencil, paint-brush and paint-can tools in this program so they can explore creative drawing and coloring this way.
