Buy plain ceramic cookie jars, two-inch round sponges and light brown and dark brown paint at your local craft store. For a small kindergarten class you will need one jar; larger classes will need two or more. Use the sponge and light brown paint to paint circles on the outside of each jar, one for each child. These are the "cookies." When the circles dry, have each child dip a pinky finger in the dark brown paint to add chocolate chips to his cookie. Once everything is dry, write each child's name with black permanent marker around his cookie.
Buy aluminum garbage cans, a small pack of medium-grain sandpaper, a can of primer and clear gloss spray paint. You will need one garbage can for every five students. You will also need lots of colorful latex paint. Have an adult lightly sand the garbage cans and lids and spray them with primer. Once the cans and lids are dry, divide the children into groups and have them decorate the cans with latex paint. Encourage them to let their imaginations go wild, or have them pick a theme for each can. Allow the cans to dry, then use a permanent marker to write the name of each child on the part of the can she has decorated. Finally, have an adult spray each can with a few coats of clear gloss.
Buy wooden or metal serving trays, colorful paint and clear gloss spray paint. You will need one tray for every three kids. Take a few informal class pictures and glue one in the middle of each tray. Have the children paint their art on the trays. They can do finger-print art, hand prints or free-style art. Have the children paint their names on the trays or have an adult write their names with a permanent marker. Once the trays are dry, have an adult spray them with several coats of clear gloss paint.
Buy a plain or clear shower curtain at your local department store. Have an adult section the curtain off in equal squares with a permanent marker, one square for each child. Save one square for the school name, the classroom number and the date. Have each child color a square of the shower curtain with his portrait or a family portrait and his name. The edges of the shower curtain can be painted with colorful finger prints. You can also glue plastic rhinestones, beads or glitter along the edges. To protect the curtain, have an adult spray it with a clear gloss spray paint. Only allow kindergartners to use small objects such as beads under adult supervision.
