Science Ideas for Kindergarten Teachers

Science is a subject best taught through observation, experimentation and hands-on learning. Children in kindergarten learn scientific lessons more easily by visual processing, as the logical processing of a child between 5 and 6 is not developed enough for complex education. Science ideas for kindergarten teachers are best created using various methods and repeated for remembrance.
  1. Learning Science Through Art

    • Using art to teach smaller children encourages creativity as well as language development. The science lessons that are easily taught to a kindergarten student are those that also create an opportunity for the child to talk about the project. Explaining to the children about weather, then asking them to draw a storm, gives the child the chance to create a picture of what they heard the teacher say using their imagination and personal memories. After the picture is done, allowing the student to tell the story of his picture not only sets the new information firmly in his memory, but also in his classmates' memories as well.

    Learning Science Through Gardening

    • Teaching Kindergarten children about the life cycle is easier if done through hands-on projects that require long-term observation. Planting a garden helps the children understand how plants live. Adding water, placing the plant in sunlight and ensuring it has soil help the child understand a plant's needs. Planting a garden outside will allow for this lesson and lessons about bugs and wildlife. Experimenting with different types of plants and different amounts of water will further children's learning.

    Learning Science Through Experimentation

    • A child remembers a lesson better if they experience it using more than one sense. Experimenting with the senses through cooking and foods helps a child to learn about heat, basic chemical changes such as sugar dissolving in water and decomposing if the food is left out too long. The children can cook popcorn and use all five senses to learn: smell while it's cooking, sight to watch the bag grow, hearing the kernels pop, touch to feel the difference between popped and unpopped popcorn and taste to tell the difference between buttered and unbuttered popcorn.

    Learning Science Through Math

    • Math is often a difficult subject for 5-year-olds due to an inability to grasp certain logical processes; however, using math to learn science helps in developing these skills. A scavenger hunt with special directions that prompts the use of math, but also requires scientific study helps in learning both subjects. An example of a search question is to find the water glass with the most water. This makes the children process the fact that the glasses have differing amounts of water as well as figuring out which has more.
