Smart Board Estimation Games for Kindergarteners

A Smartboard is an interactive whiteboard that turns your computer into an interactive learning tool. Smartboards are popping up in classrooms, providing valuable learning tools. There are several interactive games available for your classroom Smartboard that focus on skill building, collaborative learning and technology. Smartboards are touch sensitive, so once your computer display is shown on the whiteboard, you can use your finger or a pointer to navigate through the games. The Smartboard is so simple to use, that it is appropriate even in Kindergarten classrooms.
  1. PBS Kids: Which Clifford?

    • The PBS Kids website has an extensive list of interactive white board games for educators to use in the classroom. This simple estimation game stars everyone's favorite big red dog, Clifford. The game lists several scenarios, like "Which Clifford can fit through the hole in the fence?" Children can then choose which Clifford can complete the task, the puppy-sized Clifford, or the fully grown Clifford. In addition to estimation skills, the game also introduces size comparison vocabulary, as well as spatial relationships.

    Smart Exchange -- Estimating

    • Through the website SMART Exchange, you can connect with other teachers as well as share your favorite Smartboard activities. The website contains an extensive list of estimation games for various age groups. For Kindergartners, there is a simple estimating game where children will have to guess which group of items is more or less. For example, the picture will show two bunches of balloons, and children will estimate which bunch has more balloons. You can customize the games to fit your needs on the website before downloading to your classroom Smartboard.

Smart Exchange -- Estimate to the Nearest 10

    • This game, also listed on the SMART exchange website, encourages children to perform simple estimation tasks. Some of the tasks include placing groups of gumballs in order from smallest group to largest group, or estimate the number of apples in a group to the nearest ten and decide if the number is closer to 10 or 20. The tasks become increasingly more difficult as you make your way through the game. This game is appropriate for Kindergarten and first grade.

    Smart Exchange - Estimation Station

    • This game, also listed on the SMART Exchange website, is for children who have had a bit of practice with estimation in the past. Children will use visual aids to estimate one, two and three digit numbers. For example, the game will display a box and a basketball and ask "How many basketballs can fit in this box?" and give the children a choice of three numbers: 2, 20 or 200. This game can be played as a large group activity, or can be used for individual practice.
