Worksheets can be very helpful in teaching students how to work with the English alphabet. A worksheet typically contains several problems that students have to solve, in ascending order of difficulty. There are sites on the internet where you can download worksheets for printing. A typical worksheet for alphabet activities contains sections that ask students to sound out the pronunciation of letters, match letters with objects whose names start with that letter and list letters of the alphabet in the correct order.
Alphabet blocks are commonly used in language learning activities for younger (e.g. preschool) students. With alphabet blocks, students can make an attempt at arranging letters in alphabetical order before they are able to spell. Activities with alphabet blocks include teaching children the alphabet by having them put blocks in alphabetical order and having students spell simple words by placing blocks side by side. The former activity is more appropriate for preschool, while the latter is appropriate for kindergarten.
Games are increasingly becoming part of preschool and kindergarten curriculum. Children love to play, and when play is focused on meaningful alphabet exercises, it can be used to teach them the alphabet. One online game that is used to teach kids the alphabet is the British Council's "Alphabet Antics," in which the child is challenged to click on the letter that the computer voice says out loud.
Young children can accomplish more working in a group than they can individually. The group dynamic gives children the incentive to work together, which can build social bonds while teaching the material. One group activity that kids can work on together is an alphabet jungle. Each student in the class makes at least one large letter (cut out of construction paper) and one animal image. The animals are picked for having names that start with a corresponding alphabet letter (e.g. "A" for alligator, "Z" for zebra). At the end of the activity, the students put their letters on animal images on an outdoorsy mural, which serves as a backdrop.
