Writing & Literacy Stations for Kindergarten

Your kindergarten students are probably not reading and writing yet. Still, you can teach your kindergartners the basics of writing and literacy, such as the alphabet, writing their name and putting a sentence together. Make these activities more fun by setting up writing and literacy stations around the classroom. When you break students into groups and give them a set amount of time at each station, the carnival atmosphere will make learning seem like more fun.
  1. Pasta Name-Writing Station

    • Set up a station in the classroom where kids can get hands-on experience writing their names. Have an adult volunteer write each student's name on a piece of construction paper in large, clear letters. Bring in bowls of dry pasta of various shapes, some straight and some curved. Using white glue, students can write their names in pasta over top of the writing. Let the glue dry and let students take their pasta names home with them.

    Alphabet Picture Station

    • Make a station where kindergartners can associate words and pictures with letters of the alphabet. Have one large piece of construction paper for each letter of the alphabet, with the letter written at the top. Bring in a pile of magazines and set them up with child-safe scissors and white glue. When children arrive at the station, they can choose any letter-sheet they like and add a picture from a magazine of something that begins with that letter. In this way, students will collaborate in making a collage for each letter of the alphabet. Allow students to find as many pictures for letters as they can during their time at the station.

    Words for Pictures Station

    • Have a station in the classroom that helps students with the basics of writing. Make worksheets with a variety of pictures of objects on them, with a few blank lines underneath each picture. Children should write the name of the object beneath the picture. If they have time, they can also write words they associate with the object. For example, for a refrigerator, students can also write the words "cold," "food" and "snack."

    Create a Sentence Station

    • One station in the classroom can be for helping students learn the basics of putting a sentence together. On index cards, write down a variety of words, including nouns, verbs, articles and conjunctions. Write only one word per card. Have students look through the cards and put together a sentence. Make an adult volunteer is on hand to help. Once they have completed a sentence, have the adult copy it down on the bottom of a sheet of paper. Allow students to try writing the sentence themselves, if they like. Have students draw a picture of what is happening in the sentence on the same sheet.
