Make a journal writing center that allows kindergarteners to practice writing with and without prompts. Provide writing journals and pencils. Cut out pictures of items or scenes from old magazines. Glue pictures to pages of the journal. Encourage the children to write down words that describe the picture. Alternatively, leave the page blank and add prompts, such as "My Favorite Food is" or "My Favorite Animal is." Encourage children to illustrate their journal entries.
Create a poetry station that provides children with exposure to rhymes and poems. Provide colorful books of poetry for children. Supply pencils and paper or journals so that the kindergarteners can write their own poetry or sets of rhyming words. Set up a compact disc player with audio recordings of poems. In addition, provide art paper, crayons, makers and watercolor sets so that children can illustrate the poems. Encourage the children to share their poems with their classmates.
Build a book station that allows kindergartners to create small story booklets. Set out colored construction paper, pencils and markers. Encourage the children to write stories on the construction paper. Alternatively, provide familiar books and let children copy the words onto the blank pages. Provide art supplies to allow them to decorate their pages. Set out materials so that the children can bind the book together, such as a hole punch and brads or a stapler. Ask the children to read their stories to their classmates.
Set up a mail station to promote letter writing skills. Set out stationery, pencils and envelopes, and encourage children to write letters to friends, family or teachers. Provide a list of words that are usually used in letters, such as the words "dear" or "love." Set out rubber stamps, postage stamps, a letter sorter and a small mail box. Kindergarteners can sort mail and put their letters in the mail box.
