Activities and Games for Sorting Shapes by Characteristics for Kindergarten

The skills of comparing, sorting and classifying shapes according to various characteristics can be taught to your kindergarteners using hands-on activities with attribute blocks. Teach the children vocabulary such as sort, categorize, group, set and the names of basic shapes to help them recognize similarities and differences in shapes. Once your students understand these relationships between shapes, they will be ready to tackle patterning.
  1. Shape Sorting Boxes

    • Collect all the squares, circles and triangles from a classroom set of attribute blocks. Find three square boxes with removable lids. Cover them with paper in solid colors. Using one box for each shape and trace the large and small versions of one shape on the lid of the box. Cut openings in the lid slightly larger than the shapes. Put the attribute blocks in a pile and tell the children to find the shapes that will fit through the holes in each box. They will sort according to shape as well as size of the shape.

    Sorting Shapes by Color

    • Use a full classroom set of attribute blocks for this sorting activity. Find plastic tubs, one each in red, yellow and blue. Put the attribute blocks in a pile. Tell the children they should look through the pile for shapes that are red and sort them into the red tub. They should do the same for yellow and blue shapes.

    Sorting Shapes by Size

    • Put two Hula Hoops next to each other on the floor. Place all the attribute blocks in a pile near the hoops. Put a large teddy bear in one hoop and a small teddy bear in the other. Have the children take turns picking an attribute block from the pile. They should put the large shapes into the big teddy bear hoop and the small shapes into the small teddy bear hoop.

Sorting Shapes by the Number of Sides

    • Make a 2-foot by 3-foot mat from white or beige oil cloth. Draw three 10-inch diameter circles using permanent black marker on the mat. Number the circles “3, 4 and 6.” Put the mat on the floor. Near the mat, make a pile of all the attribute blocks except the circles. Explain to the children that they should take turns picking an attribute block from the pile and putting it into the circle with the same number as the number of sides of their shape. Both sizes of triangles will go into the “3” circle. All the squares and rectangles will go into the “4” circle. The hexagons will go in the “6” circle.
