When teaching music to kindergarteners, stick to songs with simple and repetitive melodies. Such songs include "The Wheels on the Bus," "How Much is That Doggie in the Window?" and "Sally the Camel." These songs are very easy for even the most musically-disinclined students to learn and will help introduce your students to singing and song memorization.
Time-tested holiday songs are another type of music kindergarteners are commonly taught. Such classics as "Jingle Bells," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Silver Bells" help introduce students to seasonal music and get them into the holiday spirit. In addition, these songs are frequently performed by kindergarten classes at holiday pageants.
Educational songs serve a double purpose in kindergarten classes. Not only do they teach students basic academic facts, but singing these songs can be the first step in helping them develop an appreciation for music. No kindergarten music class would be complete without such popular educational tunes as "The Alphabet Song," "Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes" and "Old MacDonald."
Music that requires movement is sure to meet with the approval of energetic kindergarten classes. When the class is singing favorites, allow them to play such kid-friendly instruments as the bongo drum, the triangle and the tambourine. Additionally, allowing your students to get up and dance is an effective way for them to work off excess energy.
