Bug Project for Kindergartners

Though some kids find creepy, crawly bugs scary, others delight in having a six-legged or eight-legged friend crawling up their arm. No matter how a kindergarten student feels about bugs, he can learn a lot from a bug-related lesson plan that includes hands-on projects and activities.
  1. Craft Projects

    • Create bug craft projects using simple materials. Have kindergartners paint a plastic foam ball black to create a spider's body. Then have them glue googly eyes onto the ball, and stick black pipe cleaners into the ball to create the legs. Or have kids collect rocks on a nature walk, then paint them red with black dots and add eyes to resemble a ladybug. You can also create bugs out of pom-poms and walnut shells or by simply cutting a bug shape out of paper.

    Science Projects

    • Ask kindergarten children and their parents to search their backyards for bugs. Have them collect a few bugs, and put them in a jar. Be sure that the lid of the jar has holes in it so the bugs can breath, and add some leaves and other natural elements that bugs need to survive. Have the children bring their bug jars to school, and engage them in various activities such as observing and classifying the bugs by type. The kids can also draw pictures of the bugs in a scientific journal.

    Edible Projects

    • Most kindergarten students would appreciate a yummy treat while learning about bugs. Always ask parent's permission before providing snacks for children, and be aware of any food allergies and other medical conditions. Have kids use frosting to stick black licorice or pretzel legs onto a chocolate cookie body to create a spider. Also provide chocolate-coated and other candies that can be used as eyes. Create a healthier snack by putting honey or another sticky food such as peanut butter onto a celery stick and adding raisins to resemble ants crawling on a stick.

    Other Bug Projects

    • Other bug projects include reading a bug-themed book, then asking kindergarten students to create bug puppets out of lunch sacks or bug masks out of paper grocery bags. Have the students retell the story using the puppets or masks. You can also have the children pretend to be bugs by crawling or slithering on the floor to resemble a bug's movements.
