Why was children in need invented?

The idea for Children in Need came about in 1980 following conversations between Sir Terry Wogan, the BBC, and charity workers.

After the success of Comic Relief, a fundraising telethon that aired on the BBC in 1985, the BBC decided to create a similar event focused specifically on helping children in need in the United Kingdom.

Children in Need was first aired on BBC One on November 21, 1980, with Terry Wogan as the main presenter. It was a six-hour telethon that featured live music, comedy sketches, and celebrity guests, and it raised over £1 million for charities that support children in need.

Children in Need has been held annually since 1980, and it has become one of the most popular and successful fundraising events in the United Kingdom. To date, it has raised over £1 billion for charities that support children in need, and it has helped to improve the lives of millions of children across the country.

Here are some of the key objectives of Children in Need:

* To raise money for charities that support children in need in the United Kingdom.

* To raise awareness of the needs of children in need and the challenges they face.

* To encourage people to get involved in volunteering and other activities that can help children in need.

* To promote a positive image of children and childhood.
