How to Prepare for a Parent Teacher Conference

The parent-teacher conference is one of the few times during the year that you'll have the uninterrupted, undivided attention of your child's teacher. During the parent-teacher conference you can expect the teacher to give you an overall picture of how your child is doing in school, to address any issues and concerns that she may have and to answer any questions that you may have about your child's school performance. To prepare for your child's parent-teacher conference, follow these steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark your calendar. It's vitally important that you attend this conference. It's your opportunity to connect with your child's teacher and to learn about his classroom performance.

    • 2

Talk to your child. Ask your child if he has anything specific that he wants you to speak with the teacher about. Ask him how he thinks he is doing in school and what he thinks of his teacher.

    • 3

Write down your questions and concerns. Time is limited, so to keep on track and make a list of the things that you'd like to discuss with your child's teacher.

    • 4

Go into the conference with an open mind. It can be hard not to be defensive if your child is criticized, but prepare yourself to hear out your child's teacher. Give feedback and ask for ways that you can help to improve problem areas.

    • 5

Bring a notebook. You'll want to take notes on things that the teacher discusses with you so that you don't forget what you discussed.
