French Activities for Children

Whether your children are in a French or American school, you may want to introduce them to French activities to help them learn another language and become more globally oriented. There are French activities available that you can teach children at home or in school. Make sure to assess their knowledge and encourage them to apply what they've learned in a variety of situations.
  1. Active Games

    • Do some role-playing using French phrases. Describe a scenario, such as eating at a restaurant or walking in the park, and have children use French phrases to answer question or describe the imaginary situation. Teach them how to say phrases such as "Je voudrais," which means "I would like to," and "Comment dit-on __ en francais?, which means "How do you say __ in French?"

    Indoor Games

    • This is a popular French game for children that's similar to the American game "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not." Using a daisy, teach kids to tear one petal for each phrase that they say. The list of phrases include, "Je t'aime bien," "je t'aime beacoup," "je t'aime enormemont" and "je t'aime a la folie."

    Language Learning

    • Give kids French lessons to develop their language skills. Use different materials for learning depending on their grade or knowledge level. You can use flash cards for vocabulary building, as well as interactive computer programs to reinforce concepts.

    Crafts

    • Another French activity for children is to let them work with crafts. This will develop their creative side and teach them about French art at the same time. You can show them pictures of French paintings or cultural articles such as the French flag, French pastry and French scenery. Have them draw French cultural images on a card that they can give their friends or parents.

    Songs

    • Teaching kids French songs will help them learn the language and introduce them to French culture. Teach them how to sing "une chanson en francais" ("a song in French") such as the French alphabet song, "A deli delo" and "Aujourd'hui jeudi."
