Bach Flower Remedies for Children With Learning Difficulties

Bach Flower Remedies (also called Flower Essences) are tinctures made from flowers and a water/alcohol mixture. Some people believe these tinctures help them balance their emotions. Each flower remedy is made for a specific ailment of feeling. Bach makes tinctures especially for children, which are alcohol free. The remedies are used by people to supplement their daily diets. Some people feel that Bach flower remedies can help with emotional problems like anxiety and depression.
  1. Identifying the Main Problem

    • Identify the main problems your child is having. A child with learning disabilities could feel easily frustrated, scared to try new things or worried about disappointing his teachers and parents.

Different Flower Essences and Their Purposes

    • Once you have identified the symptoms, you can administer the appropriate flower essence. For frustration try Rescue Remedy, for fear of new things try Aspen, for concern about disappointing people try Elm or Red Chestnut flower. Seek a consultation with a Bach practitioner through your local health food store or online. There are many remedies to choose from. These remedies can be used on a regular basis (four times a day) and as needed.

    How to Take the Remedies

    • The remedy sold in the bottle is concentrated and needs to be diluted with water. Buy a bottle with an eyedropper, and place four drops of the essence in the bottle, then fill the rest of the bottle with purified water. Take four drops of the diluted mixture in a glass of water four times a day. You may also add the essence to bath water, or place drops of it on your skin. Animals can also take these remedies, as can plants. Some people add rescue remedy to the water of newly repotted plants. Bach even makes remedies specifically for animals.

    History of Bach Flower Remedies

    • Bach Flower Remedies have been produced in England since the 1930s. Edward Bach, a doctor and homeopath, invented Bach Flower Remedies when he noticed that being around different flowers affected how he was feeling. He chose the flowers, and the corresponding feelings they work on, based on what he was feeling and how a plant helped him feel. He believed that the positive energy of the plants could help counteract the negative energy that was acting internally on a person and making them feel bad or sick.

How Bach Flower Remedies Are Produced

    • Originally the remedies were made of dew harvested in the early morning from the flowers. Later, as demand for his product grew, Bach placed flowers in clean water and let them sit in the sun so that the water could absorb the properties of the flowers. The modern way of producing these flower essences is to steep flowers and plants that have been wildcrafted (harvested from the wild, not grown in greenhouses or gardens) in boiling water to absorb their properties.

    Effectiveness

    • While many people believe in the power of Bach Flower Remedies, scientific studies have been done to test the effectiveness of Bach Flower Remedies which have shown that they work via the placebo effect---helping people feel better because they expect to feel better. Some studies believe that they also help people because the consumers are spending more time thinking about their feelings and the roots of them, and so are able to handle their feelings better.
