Grants for Private Schooling in Illinois

A private school education often provides a leg up for students to enter the college of their choice. However, finding the funds to pay for private school tuition is difficult, particularly for low-income families. Check directly with the private schools to see what scholarships they offer on a case-by-case basis.
  1. Big Shoulders Fund

    • The Big Shoulders Fund provides scholarships for elementary and high school students to attend a private Catholic school in inner-city Chicago. Big Shoulders has over 30 different types of scholarships. Parents and students should contact the principal of their school of interest to check for eligibility and review the application procedure. The Big Shoulders Fund works directly with the schools but not with prospective parents and students.

    LINK Unlimited

    • LINK Unlimited started in 1966. They are Chicago's oldest scholarship program. LINK provides scholarships and mentoring to low-income African-American Chicago youth. The application process is competitive; LINK accepts 80 new students per academic year. Students apply to a Chicagoland private school that is in partnership with LINK. LINK provides $3,500 to $4,500 per year in scholarships per student. The rest of the balance is handled through scholarships from the school itself and the student's family.

    Children's Scholarship Fund

    • The Children's Scholarship Fund (CSF) awards private school scholarships for children in grades K through 8 in the United States, and it has a division in Chicago. Parents apply directly with the CSF. Scholarships provide 25, 50 or 75 percent of tuition assistance. While CSF doesn't offer private high school scholarships, they can connect a student with a partner program that can help them. An average CSF scholarship is around $1,500. Families are required to contribute $500 per year.
