Perform safety reviews proactively, not just when an incident has occurred. Always be on the lookout for areas of your school's safety that can be improved.
Consider whether student safety is a community priority, and get the community involved through the PTA if you feel they are not engaged. School safety starts on the way to school.
Review any established emergency procedures and conduct regular drills. Students and teachers should know what to do in the event of a fire or other emergency incident.
Appoint one person on your staff to be in charge of school safety and meet with them regularly for suggestions on areas in which you can improve.
Examine your school facilities for possible safety problems. These can include unsafe equipment, dangerous objects that children can access or areas of the school that are in disrepair.
Monitor your school's outside environment and think of ways to make it safer. For instance, a nearby intersection could pose a potential risk to students. If you place a crossing guard there, you will dramatically increase safety.
