What Are Some Postitive Things About School Uniforms?

Parents and educators may wonder what are some of the positives about wearing a school uniform. In fact, there are many benefits for the school, parents and students when a school decides to adopt a uniform policy. Uniforms are simple, easy to care for and economical. School uniforms eliminate the necessity for administrators to draft clothing and style rules. Wearing a uniform can even lessen the chance that a child is teased or bullied.
  1. Save Money with School Uniforms

    • Parents of children in grade school (K-12) will see the economical benefits of school uniforms. Although there will be an initial cost to buy the outfits, parents will find that overall, getting 3-4 uniforms will cost less, in the long run, than having to purchase jeans, sweatshirts and other stylish clothing for their kids.

Additionally, money and time can be saved on laundry day with school uniforms, since all uniforms can be washed together with the same washer settings. Other children's clothing often needs to be washed separately by color or by what the clothing manufacturer suggests on the washing instructions.

Rules Decrease with School Uniform Policy

    • It is customary that student handbooks are given to families of all students at the beginning of the academic year. The handbook lists all of the school rules and regulations for parents and students, as well as for the teaching staff and administrators.

In particular, there can be multiple pages devoted to dress code policy, including many rules about what is appropriate to wear at school, and what is not. If a school decides to adopt a uniform policy, the time it takes to draft and enforce these arbitrary rules will be saved, and the handbook will be a lot lighter.

Wearing School Uniforms Can Lessen Teasing and Bullying

    • It also is important to note that, in addition to school administrators not having to enforce a dress code, they also will not have to worry about the bullying that arises from children teasing their classmates who wear less stylish clothing. This kind of teasing is especially rampant among middle school girls---a time when kids desperately want to fit in with their peers.

This is good news for parents, too. With little or no money to spare for trendy clothes, some families can rest easier knowing they will not have to worry about their kids being teased at school based on their clothing.

School Uniforms Reduce Style Battles at Home

    • A youngster's sense of style can be mystifying to parents. In the younger grades, a child does not really care if the outfit she has chosen to wear has purple stripes on top and orange polka dots on the bottom. The inevitable battle of the wills ensues. Older kids may want to wear outlandish clothing just to test their boundaries. Parents will be relieved to know that when their children are required to wear school uniforms, there will be virtually no fighting about what they should and should not wear to school.

The morning ritual of getting ready and out before the bus comes also will be vastly less stressful. There will certainly be less scrambling in the morning to find an outfit to wear if that outfit is a required school uniform.
