PTOs play a fundamental role in assisting schools to help raise funds for a variety of purposes including books, supplies, computer labs and many extra-curricular activities. In order to receive the biggest bang for their fundraising activities, PTOs should make certain the events are well planned, staffed include all grade-level parents in the school. Hold fundraisers like bingo, coffee mornings, bakery and candy sales, auctions and even sponsored music events to help raise funds for the school. Think big and organize an outdoor fair and include fun games for kids, booths for local businesses, a raffle to give away a car or a meal with a local media celebrity.
PTO members volunteer in school in a number of capacities which enhance the teaching and administrative staff's ability to deliver more resources and services to students. PTO volunteers can volunteer as teaching assistants in the classroom, as field trip chaperones, work in the lunchroom and coach after school sports teams. School principals use PTO volunteers to assist in school office work, coordinate school safety patrol tasks and help with organizing school assemblies. In addition, school libraries may welcome PTO volunteers' assistance in performing general library tasks.
A PTO-sponsored wellness week health care fair is beneficial for every member of the community. Parents are always striving to make certain the health of their child is being addressed, either through healthy school meals or regular exercise period activities. Parents can help promote better health and healthy eating and exercise habits through organization of a school wellness health fair. For example, a local doctor or health care professional can perform health screenings, while nurses could take blood and measure blood pressure. Local businesses can provide dietary food and beverages and transportation for senior citizens who want to attend.
The safety of school children is paramount for parents. PTOs should hold regular safety and security committee meetings with school officials to make certain school security precautionary measures are followed. Check to see if the public address system and all safety doors work and that the student drop off and pick up areas are always monitored by staff.
