Activities on Flower Parts

Students learn about the parts of a flower in introductory courses on nature and science. All flowers have parts known as the stamen or carpal (the male and female reproductive organs respectively) the anther (the pollen-producing part of the flower) and the filament, which connects the anther to the rest of the flower. Classroom activities not only allow students to memorize the parts of a flower but also provide an enjoyable learning experience as well.
  1. Seeds

    • An ongoing project that can be completed over the course of any season is to grow plants from seeds. The project is perfect for an indoor activity, with only a sunny window and some water needed for the plants to thrive. Select seeds for small flowerpots and work with children to plant the seeds in some potting soil. Add water to the pots and cover them with some plastic wrap, then set the pots in windows. As the plants begins to grow, discuss the parts of the flower that emerge with your students.

    Puzzles

    • Make puzzles of flower parts with some poster board and markers. Simply draw an outline of a flower on the poster board, being sure to emphasize the parts of the flower, then cut out the pieces of the flower with scissors. Label each section of the flower with its name and have your students put the flower puzzle together and discuss the flower parts as they do. Once the puzzles are complete, allow them to color the parts and glue them together on another piece of poster board that can be displayed on the wall.

    Nature

    • If you are homeschooling your child, you will have the freedom to take your child outside on nice days and explore the natural surroundings as part of your curriculum. On one such excursion take the opportunity to look for flowers and have your child point out the parts of each kind of flower. You may even want to pick some of the different types of flowers and take them back inside to dissect and discuss the parts further.

    Worksheets

    • Make your own worksheets on flower parts on your computer or by hand. Many worksheets on flower parts simply have a large outline of a flower, with the parts clearly visible, in the center of the page. On the side of the paper is a list of the flower parts written out. A child has only to draw a line from the written name of the flower part to the flower part. A worksheet is completed by the child coloring in the flower with crayons. This activity serves to reinforce what the child has already learned in class.
