How to Play Splat With Vocabulary Words

Children enjoy playing board games. Along with promoting social skills, games can also provide methods to learn academic skills. Almost any existing board game can be enhanced to include a scholastic aspect. For example, the Splat game can be transformed into a reading intervention by incorporating vocabulary development and review. Children will enjoy playing the game while strengthening expressive knowledge and spelling skills. Turning the Splat game into a vocabulary review is simple.

Instructions

    • 1
      Set up the game board.

Create your Splat game pieces using the Squish-It dough (or Play-doh). Each players must have two "bugs." Place your game pons at the starting square. Set up the game board and pieces as instructed in the directions. However, instead of using the provided Splat cards, create your own cards using index cards. On each card, write a vocabulary word.

Use vocabulary cards instead of Splat cards.

Play the game by rolling the dice, moving as per the original game instructions. Whenever you land on a Splat space, draw a vocabulary card. The player selecting the card reads the word aloud. The other players must use paper and pencil to correctly spell the word. Players who spell the word incorrectly get "splatted." Those with squished bugs must use their other bug and start at the beginning. If both of your bugs get squished, you must make two more bugs and start at the beginning.

Race to the end to win the game.

Win the game by getting both bugs to the end of the game board.
