Introduce vocabulary words and explain their meanings. Ask your student to repeat each word. Give examples of where the word would be used and when. Use a visual representation from a book, magazine or newspaper.
Ask the student to name words with similar meanings. Have her create examples of how she could use the words in different contexts.
Encourage her to experiment by using the same word in a variety of sentences.
Take your student on a field trip to practice vocabulary. Go shopping, to the park or a museum, and to use a different word in each setting. Have fun describing people, places and objects in a creative manner.
Practice the vocabulary as often as possible. Read books containing unusual words and encourage your students to work them into conversation. This will help make different words and expressions part of their daily routine.
