How to Teach New Vocabulary Words in Homeschool

Learning new vocabulary words is an important part of your child's homeschooling education. Knowing the meaning of more words helps your child read and understand increasingly difficult books. Your child's writing and speaking improves with the more words he knows. Using multiple methods to teach vocabulary words keeps the student interested and provides him with context to help understand the meanings. An advantage of homeschooling is you can focus individually on your child, focus on his strengths and slow down when your child needs extra help on a topic.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose new vocabulary words from a story your child is reading. They need to be words your child doesn't already know and are appropriate for their age level. Your child encounters the new words while reading and has to pause and try to determine what the words mean. Context from surrounding words and sentences assist in the learning process.

    • 2

Help your child look up the definition for the new vocabulary word in the dictionary. Knowing how to effectively use a dictionary is a skill children need to learn at a young age.

    • 3

Provide synonyms and antonyms to help your child understand new words. These can be found in the dictionary or websites such as thesaurus.com.

    • 4

Use pictures and sounds to help your child learn the meaning of new vocabulary words. You can draw or show pictures of nouns for your child to see. Your child can use flashcards or match words with pictures on a worksheet to help learn. Sounds can be used to illustrate words that make noise such as beeping, yelling and roaring.
