Wolf Scout Advancement Ideas

One responsibility of Wolf Den leaders is to help Cub Scouts in the group advance to the rank of Bear by earning their Wolf badges. Trying to keep a group of 8-year-old boys on task during weekly meetings, however, is a challenge. By choosing physical, hands-on activities that fill Wolf badge requirements, leaders help boys advance while maintaining their own sanity.
  1. Mini Olympics

    • Take advantage of your Cub Scouts' energy by holding a mini Olympic Games that fulfills the requirements of the "Feats of Skill" achievement. In advance, ask Cub Scouts to bring their baseball gloves to the den meeting. Have scouts pair up, stand 10 steps away from each other and play catch. Next, have a gymnastics segment in which each scout must complete a front roll, a back roll and a falling-forward roll, all of which are explained in the Wolf Handbook. Finally, have scouts jog in place for five minutes.

    Tools Night

    • Have a "Tools Night" to fulfill the requirements of the "Tools for Fixing and Building" achievement. Have boys point out and name at least seven tools. Allow them to demonstrate the use of pliers by gripping a piece of metal wire and bending it to one side. Explain the difference between standard and Phillips screws and screwdrivers. Give boys a chance to drive a screw into a board and then remove it. Allow scouts to hammer nails into a board. Finally, make a simple project like a birdhouse or bookends.

    Cub Scout Barbecue

    • Plan to use two den meetings on the "Cooking and Eating" achievement. At the first meeting, display a copy of the food guide pyramid and ask scouts to name the different foods and groups listed. As a group, plan meals for a family for one day, making sure each meal contains foods from at least three groups. Plan the menu for a Cub Scout barbecue to be held the following week. To complete the requirements for the achievement, Cub Scouts must help fix one meal for their families and one breakfast for themselves at home.

    Show and Tell

    • Have a "Show and Tell" den meeting to meet most of the requirements of the "Start a Collection" achievement. In advance, tell scouts to bring a collection of at least 10 items that they have mounted or arranged in a neat fashion. Collections could include stamps, rocks or leaves. At a den meeting, have each scout stand and present his collection. Tell scouts they will need to do the "Connection for Positive Attitude" requirement of this achievement at home.
