In first grade, information is provided to the students quickly. By behaving and listening to the teacher, a student is able to receive that information. Just as important, the student does not distract her fellow classmates from receiving the information. By maintaining good character, she is not a distraction to the class. She will be able to share information with classmates who might not have heard the information during the lesson.
Teachers are learning just like students in first grade. They teachers are learning the personalities of the students and which students exhibit good behavior and which are more likely to exhibit poor behavior. By demonstrating good character and behavior, a student can earn the trust of a teacher. This can help the student if he and another student are involved in an argument and the teacher has to decide which student to believe when provided with conflicting information.
A student with good character will find it is easier to get other children to trust her. A student who doesn't lie, shares in class and is helpful can find that others gravitate to her in the classroom. A student with good character will find that she is well received by the parents of her friends. If she behaves while visiting their houses, she is likely to be invited back in the future for additional play dates.
Exhibiting good character in first grade provides the opportunity for the students to receive awards. Teachers can vote for the child and award him with prizes such as certificates. The student can be awarded with a special privilege such as being the first in line for recess or lunch. He might even be able to take part in a special activities such as at Orrville Elementary school, where a student with good character was allowed to ride in a police car to school.
