Second Grade Student of the Week Activities

Building a classroom community and getting to know your students better is an ongoing process. One way to encourage students to share about their lives outside of the classroom is through a student-of-the-week program. Each week, select one student to be the student of the week and allow your students to build their self-confidence and shine during their moment in the spotlight.
  1. About Me

    • At the beginning of the week, have your second-grade student of the week bring in items from home to share with classmates. Suggested items include five to 10 photos, a favorite story he wrote or a favorite piece of artwork to display on a "Student of the Week" bulletin board. Provide a space in the classroom to display other items such as sports trophies, stuffed animals and rock, seashell or snow globe collections.

    Favorite Picture Book

    • Invite your student of the week to bring in a favorite picture book from home to share with the class. Give your student of the week the option of reading the book aloud himself, having a parent stop by to read the story or allowing you to read the story. Encourage your student of the week to share why this story is important or memorable and give classmates time to ask questions or share comments.

    Family Lunch

    • Ask parents, grandparents or other family members to join your student of the week for lunch one day at school. For students whose family cannot attend lunch during the week, see if an older sibling or learning buddy in the school can join the student for lunch one day. Other options include inviting the student of the week and three of her friends to eat lunch in the room with you one day.

    Hobbies and Interests

    • Set aside 15 minutes one day for the student of the week to share a special hobby, talent or interest. Students may play a musical instrument, show the class how to draw cartoons or demonstrate their gymnastic or karate skills. If your school allows animals for a short visit, prearrange a time for parents to bring in a pet dog, rabbit, bird or iguana to share.

    Keepsake Book

    • Have classmates write a short letter to the student of the week. Ideas for letters include writing why the student of the week is a good friend, something that classmates learned or found interesting about the student or favorite shared memories. Take a picture of the star student to laminate for a front cover. Bind letters into a keepsake book to send home with the student of the week.
