How to Inform a Gifted Child's Teacher About His Accelerated Work

Informing teachers about your child's gifted or special talents can be tricky. Many parents believe that their children are special and extremely intelligent. Unfortunately, few children are truly gifted. Many teachers are usually skeptical toward discussion about gifted children. To present your case, you have to organize a portfolio of the child's work, enroll your child to talent search tests and programs, and request a conference with the teacher. Be sure to be polite and considerate when you meet with your child's teachers.

Instructions

    • 1

Gather the accelerated work for your gifted child and organize it in a portfolio. Date all assignments and include a progression of work. Show that the work is above the child's grade level by comparing the work to the national or state standards. The department of education of each state has its standards and guidelines for each grade and subject. If your child's talent is in the arts or music, present a digital portfolio of the work. Present all awards, publications, presentations and standardized test scores if available.

Enroll your child to a talent search from major universities, such as The Johns Hopkins University or Duke University. These universities regularly host aptitude test to identify gifted children. If your child is selected to be in the gifted group, send the results to his teachers directly. If your child is gifted in a particular subject, encourage your child to compete in various competitions in the field. For example, if your child is gifted in math, have him compete in the American Mathematics Competition.

Set up a parent-teacher conference. If necessary, request the presence of the principal of the school. Present your portfolio of the accelerated work along with any outstanding achievements of your child. Be ready to present a proposal of future accelerated work. Request for testing out of certain grade levels and/or enrolling in the honors classes.
