Create a transportation-themed lesson plan. Include classroom activities and at least one field trip, if possible. The field trip can be as simple as taking your class to the parking lot for a guided tour of a school bus' inner workings.
Schedule in-class activities. A younger child will be engaged by art projects, such as coloring pictures of different transportation methods. But an older child will need a more challenging task, such as preparing a presentation on the history of trains in the United States.
Plan a field trip. If you have an aviation or nautical museum in your town, this is the perfect place to bring a school group learning about transportation. Contact the museum beforehand with the number of students and to reserve discounted tickets for an educational group.
Invite a guest speaker. An employee from the local public transportation authority, a pilot or a train conductor will offer a new experience for students. A guest can bring personal insights to a lesson that may not be available in a textbook.
