How to Teach Children About Transport

Teaching children about transportation is a hands-on activity. There is no better way to impart an appreciation for transit than a bus ride or a field trip to the train station. But, in-class activities are also useful when teaching children about the different types of transportation. Combining in-class work with a field trip is the ideal, because the more active the lesson, the more likely a child will be engaged.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a transportation-themed lesson plan. Include classroom activities and at least one field trip, if possible. The field trip can be as simple as taking your class to the parking lot for a guided tour of a school bus' inner workings.

    • 2

Schedule in-class activities. A younger child will be engaged by art projects, such as coloring pictures of different transportation methods. But an older child will need a more challenging task, such as preparing a presentation on the history of trains in the United States.

    • 3

Plan a field trip. If you have an aviation or nautical museum in your town, this is the perfect place to bring a school group learning about transportation. Contact the museum beforehand with the number of students and to reserve discounted tickets for an educational group.

Invite a guest speaker. An employee from the local public transportation authority, a pilot or a train conductor will offer a new experience for students. A guest can bring personal insights to a lesson that may not be available in a textbook.
