The Use of Pedagogy in the Classroom

Pedagogy is teaching methodology. The techniques and style a teacher employs to teach her students is the pedagogy in the classroom. The point of teaching is not simply the teaching of a particular subject or topic. A teacher helps students acquire and develop skills that will make better learners, both in and out of the classroom. The pedagogy she uses to achieve this objective is critical to the success of this objective.
  1. The Use of Pedagogy

    • A teacher who does not have a clear, comprehensible teaching methodology will lose the interest of her students. Pedagogy means effective, efficient teaching. Students are clear about the work and what is expected. The goals of the class are defined and stated. Whether the pedagogy is discussion, debate or lecture, the aim is to reach every student in the class -- to tailor the lesson so positive, progressive learning takes place, In the absence of pedagogy teaching and learning is misdirected and random.

    The Absence of Pedagogy

    • Every student has a distinctive learning style. A teacher has to recognize the student's style and apply a method that facilitates each student's individual learning process. The theory of Multiple Intelligences states that people learn in different ways because intelligences are different. Pedagogy takes this factor into account. If not, students who prefer the hands-on method of learning will fall back in a lecture class; if methods are not flexible, student learning stalls.

    Assessment and Growth

    • The pedagogical method will focus on the continued growth and advancement of both teacher and student. Curriculum design and choice, teaching methodology, ways and regularity of assessment will be monitored and the one that works best will be selected. Classroom pedagogy should be inseparable from the changing, growing needs of students; using obsolete methods in a classroom where students require the latest technology to inspire and motivate them to work is something school authorities and planners need to consider when planning the curriculum.

    Solutions

    • The use of computer technology, interactive boards, interest-based as well as need-based activities, using methods that not only instruct but enrich the mind, are some ways in which teaching pedagogy can be nurtured and honed to fit the needs of students that are living in a digital world of advanced technology. Treating every child like a gifted child and catering to his special needs is what some education planners are advocating for schools.
