Effective Use of the Smart Board in the Classroom

Smart Boards are a brand of electronic, touch-screen whiteboards used in schools in place of traditional chalkboards. Smart Boards make effective use of computer technology that students are using to assist in their education.
  1. Playing videos using the Smart Board in the classroom

    • Children watching a movie

Reel-to-reel projectors and the white pull-down screen used to be the standard method of showing movies in the classroom for instruction. Smart Boards have replaced this method, using a projector that is attached to the ceiling and powered on with a remote control. Remote controls allow the user to start and stop videos durng instruction to ask and answer questions. Videos may be played using VHS, DVD, or online from Discovery.com and UnitedStreaming.com. Smartboards are used with a projector and are linked to a teacher’s computer.

    Computers onscreen for instruction

    • Teacher using a laptop computer in the classroom.

Computers are connected to the Smart Board through wiring, which allows educators to use different types of software, depending on the subject. The teacher powers on the overhead projector and uses either a desktop or a laptop, properly connected, and brings up the software package he or she is using. For instance, a math instructor can use a math program on the screen and the students can follow along at their seats.

SMART board has a touchscreen for instruction

    • Teacher instructing students in the classroom.

The Smart Board is equipped with a touchscreen that can be used with appropriate software for instruction. The educator pulls up the software for usage, taps the screen where the key buttons are located, and can bring up different images for explanation to the class, depending on the subject and the unit being taught. Students may also be invited up to the board and can use the touchscreen, depending on how it's programmed, and can answer questions from instructor. The board operates similar to other touchscreen technologies, such as smartphones.

Using the electronic pen for instruction

    • Educator using a board in the classroom for instruction.

The Smart Board is equipped with a touch pen that operates in a similar method to the touchscreen. However, the pen allows the instructor to actually write on the board during instruction. This is very effective for math and English, reading, or spelling subjects. The instructor can still use the touch pad to bring up the desired effect, image, or screen, and use the pen just as he or she would use chalk on a chalkboard. With one touch, the entire screen can be cleared for further instruction. Users can move things around the board using their fingers or specially designed pens.
