How to Explain Diphthongs to Children

Just the mention of a grammar lesson to the typical student is enough to make them run for the hills. But, grammar does not have to be scary and it can actually be entertaining for both the students and the teacher. If you are trying to come up with new and innovative ways to teach diphthongs to children, there are several steps that you can take to make learning easy and exciting for everyone.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach the basics of diphthongs. Diphthongs are vowel sounds that combine two separate sounds into a single sound, which is unbroken. The most common diphthongs in the English language are --ow and --oy, for words such as now, how, and boy or joy. Children can learn basic diphthongs by learning each individual sound. Break students into small groups and have a contest to see which group can come up with the most diphthongs.

Decide which materials to use. Index cards are a great way for students to learn diphthongs. Ask the students to make index cards for each set of diphthong sounds. Then, you can review the cards with the students and make sure that their cards are correct. The students can then use their cards as a study aide to help them prepare for quizzes and tests. This is a good way to use visual aides to help students learn quickly and easily.

Play games as a way of teaching. A great way to break up the monotony is to have a exciting game day with your students. You can create a game show where the students battle each other to see who can come up with the most diphthongs in a contest. Try to use the same format as popular TV game shows and you can also dress us as your favorite TV game show host. This is a way for the students to interact with each other playing games and at the same time learning diphthongs.

Challenge the students with writing poems using diphthongs is a great way to get the students excited about learning, too. Ask the students to bring their favorite poem or song to class and read it to the other students. Then, ask the students who are listening to the poem or song to write down as many diphthongs that they hear. At the end of the song or poem, check to see if the students were able to correctly identify each diphthong. This is exciting for the students and a great way for them to learn.
