How to Teach Probability at Basic Education Level

Probability is basically the likelihood of an event occurring. It sounds like a simple enough concept, but it can be a bit confusing to students who are learning about it for the first time. When teaching probability to young students who are at a basic education level, keep it simple. To illustrate the concept, you can use an activity that relies on random chance to demonstrate probability.

Instructions

    • 1

Start the lesson by giving your students a basic definition of what probability is. Probability is the chance that a particular outcome will occur.

    • 2

Relate the definition you gave to something that your students can relate to. For example, you might ask them what they think the probability is of a coin landing on heads.

    • 3

Use a simple spinner to help demonstrate the concept of probability. For the basic education level, the spinner should have four colors.

    • 4

Show the students how to determine the probability that the spinner will land on one of the four colors. There are four different colors, and the spinner can only land on one at a time. Therefore, the probability that the spinner will land on each color is one in four.
