How to Teach Basic Measuring Techniques

Measurement is a core skill of the elementary school classroom. Children need to learn measurement in order to complete a variety of projects that come up later in their academic careers and measurement skills are critical in many areas of adult life. While you do not need to teach your students every tiny detail of every method of measurement, a few simple activities based on essential measuring techniques should be included somewhere in your curriculum.

Instructions

    • 1

Send your students outside to gather similar objects of different sizes. Leaves and small rocks are excellent for this purpose. Have each student cover the surface of the object with Unifix cubes to see which object has a larger area.

    • 2

Set up a pouring station in your classroom with colored water and different size containers. Your students will learn the basics of volume by pouring water from one container into another.

    • 3

Give each student a large piece of butcher paper and a partner. Students should trace their partner onto the butcher paper and then use rulers to figure out the total height of the figure.

    • 4

Place a large thermometer just outside of your classroom and have your students read it each day. This quick and simple activity helps students learn temperature measurement.

    • 5

Ask students to bring items in from home. Have the class organize these items from smallest to largest, learning the descriptive terms for size as they go.
