How to Write Presentation Outlines

A presentation is one way of providing listeners with information. An oral presentation is like a speech: you provide your listeners with all of the information about your topic or your project. You can also have a presentation that includes visual aids, which can be handy and allow people to get information from you even when you aren't speaking. No matter what type of presentation you have, you'll need an outline so you know exactly where your presentation is headed.

Instructions

    • 1

Jot down the topic of your presentation, including your main idea or thesis, so you'll know what you're working with when it comes to your outline.

    • 2

Write down several main points that you would like to discuss in your presentation. These might come from an essay or project you are doing a presentation on, or they might come from the research you have done for the presentation itself.

    • 3

Order the main points in a way that makes sense to begin your outline. You might put them in chronological order, such as in a presentation about the sinking of the Titanic, or in order of importance, such as a presentation about Civil Rights. You might also choose your own order, if you are presenting on an object like cats or the Sahara Desert, and the order of your points is arbitrary. Write the points in the order you choose and leave room between the points.

    • 4

Write down facts or details underneath each of the points that you have already listed. Make sure that you include everything that you would like to say about each of the points.

    • 5

Add an introduction, in which you introduce your subject, to the start of your outline. Add a conclusion, in which you sum up your subject, to the end of your outline.
