How to Write Behavioral Objectives for Second Grade Phonics Lessons

Behavioral objectives should be approached as if setting a goal. For example, a behavioral objective for a student can include phrases such as "will articulate" or "will describe." These are the action items a teacher wishes to see their student able to perform by the conclusion of a lesson. In a phonics lesson for second graders, these behavioral objectives should keep in mind the goals of a phonics program and the intellectual capacity of a young age level.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the goal of the lesson. An appropriate lesson for a second grader can include learning to pronounce words with silent letters, or linking multisyllabic words together through sounding them out.

    • 2

Decide what is an appropriate expectation for a second grader to achieve after completing this particular phonics lesson. If the student should be able to sight read words with a silent letter in them, then the behavioral objective can include the phrasing "the student will identify the silent letters in words and enunciate them correctly when reading aloud."

    • 3

Include one to two behavioral objectives for each phonics lesson. A second grade level lesson should not include too many objectives in one lesson so as not to overwhelm or discourage the student.
