Today's teachers must have at least a basic understanding of technology. Most classrooms today have a technological orientation and the teacher is expected to have sufficient knowledge to incorporate technology into teaching practices. Basic knowledge of computers is essential. A teacher should know how to run a program, perform basic commands, have a good knowledge of the Internet and search practices and understand the multimedia functions of computers.
Good interpersonal skills are vital for a teacher. Teachers must have empathy for their students and be able to relate to individuals in a manner appropriate to their age and maturity. A teacher needs to be supportive and encouraging in order to get the best out the students. Teachers also need to have patience to cope with what can be very trying circumstances in the classroom.
Teachers should possess an excellent knowledge of the subject or subjects they are teaching. To do this they must keep studying themselves and keep up-to-date with the latest practices and developments. Most teachers need to be proficient in more than one area or will need to run basic sports classes or have something else to offer a school aside from their specialist area.
As with any employee a teacher must possess the basic qualities of a good employee. They need to be reliable and dependable. They should possess a passion for what they do and have a real enthusiasm for their job that is demonstrable to their students. Teachers need to be disciplined in their workplace, as a school is a very public, open environment where high standards of behavior are expected from teachers.
