How to Memorize Mnemonic Math Facts

Even with a calculator, the rules of math are often difficult to remember. Basic addition and subtraction is one thing, but adding fractions, exponents and other more complicated parts of a problem can confuse school children if you don't offer tips to help them remember the rules. To prevent students from forgetting the basics of mathematical equations, many teachers use mnemonics to help them remember complex rules.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach children the order of operations for algebra using mnemonics. Order of operations comes into play when you have problems that include a number of mathematical processes, such as multiplication, exponents and parentheses. Teach children to solve these problems with the mnemonic "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" for parentheses, exponents, multiply, divide, add, subtract.

    • 2

Instill the order of long division by teaching children "Dad, Mom, Sister, Brother." This teaches students to first divide, then multiply, subtract and bring-down.

    • 3

      Remember Roman numerals using the saying, "I Value Xylophones Like Cows Dig Milk," which stands for I = 1, V = 5, X = 10, L = 50, C = 100, D = 500, M = 1000.

    • 4

Teach metric measurements to kids by using the phrase "King Henry Died Drinking Chocolate Milk" for kilo, hecta, deca, deci, centi, milli.
