How to Teach Chinese to Children

Children are sponges when it comes to learning a second language, even languages as seemingly difficult as Chinese. Whether you are a teacher and want to integrate Chinese lessons into your regular classroom activities or a parent interested in teaching your child Chinese, there are several activities that will help make your efforts more effective.

Instructions

    • 1

Label items around your house or classroom with Chinese characters. Use the Chinese words for those items in addition to English words when talking to your students.

    • 2

Teach children songs and nursery rhymes in Chinese. A number of Chinese instruction websites offer suggestions, and some even include include pronunciation guides and audio downloads.

    • 3

Read children's books that are partially or completely written in Chinese. Look for books with pictures and common vocabulary words that are already familiar in English.

    • 4

Repeat new words and phrases often. Even when your students seem to have mastered certain vocabulary words, continue to use those words regularly. While children tend to learn new languages quickly, grammar basics and vocabulary can also be easily forgotten without regular use.

    • 5

Use your students as teachers. One of the most effective ways to secure knowledge of a new subject is to teach it to someone else. Ask your students to lead review lessons, or teach a small group a new word or skill. Parents who are teaching at home can have their children teach friends and family members.
