Teach children about the basic concepts of similarity and difference using concrete objects and examples. Show children several types of flowers that vary in size, color, scent and texture. Ask them to think about the ways that the flowers are the same and the ways the flowers are different.
Ask kids to make a list of things they like and dislike. The topics could include things from their favorite to least favorite colors, types of food, movies, television shows and music. Have the children take turns reading their lists in class. Use the time to demonstrate and discuss the fact that each person has individual tastes and that we don't agree on everything. At the same time, discuss the importance of tolerance and respect for viewpoints that differ from our own. Talk about how we can learn interesting new things from people whose views are different than yours.
Celebrate ethnic and cultural differences in the classroom. Ask students to share their family and cultural backgrounds in class. This may include making posters, sharing traditional folk music, telling stories, discussing different types of holiday celebrations, talking about religious practices and so forth.
Share videos and books with the students. Dedicate an age-appropriate movie theme to provide the children with an interesting story and visual images for different cultures and lifestyles.
