How to Educate Blind Children

The proper education of blind children has come under scrutiny over the last few years, mostly due to the lack of consistency in learning plans. Care must be taken to implement the basics, such as teaching braille and teaching blind children to use new technologies.

Instructions

    • 1

Teach the children braille, which is the cornerstone for blind education. Many blind children are leaving school without knowing how to read braille, which is tantamount to illiteracy with sighted children.

    • 2

Focus on educational programs that emphasize the development of motor skills and physical development. An intelligently designed curriculum should involve exercise, which develops strength and balance. Additional activities should explore the other senses, especially touch and hearing.

    • 3

Look for a learning program that can identify additional obstacles, such as milder and more functional forms of autism or attention deficit disorder. A comprehensive approach to education should be used, not just a program designed to deal with blindness.

    • 4

Implement a learning plan that brings blind children out of their shells so they can embrace the world around them. It is common for blind children to withdraw from the world. A proper curriculum for blind children should stimulate their curiosity and make them willing participants in their environments.

    • 5

Encourage social interaction, especially with other children in the class. Blind children may be reminded less of their impairment and feel less ostracized if they know there are others in the world with the same challenges. Classroom projects should involve group activities whenever possible.

    • 6

Continue to educate blind children after they leave the classroom environment. A blind child can make more progress if the lessons they learn in the classroom are applied at home.
