Have students write a draft of their story on notebook paper and decide how many pages their book will be. Usually 8-10 pages should be long enough for a short story. Have students plan out exactly what words and pictures will go on each page before they begin constructing their booklet.
Fold the cardstock in half to create a book cover and pages, and then staple together on the crease. Have students use crayons and markers to decorate the cover of their booklet.
Create pop-up pictures for each page using construction paper. Give students ideas for pop-up objects, such as important people from the Civil War, weapons used, or houses and buildings. Have students select 1-2 objects per page that will be pop-up characters and have them draw those on construction paper using markers or crayons. Cut out the pictures, leaving a one inch strip of paper below the character to create a foldable tab.
Have students write and illustrate the pages of their book, leaving room for their pop-up characters. Insert pop-up characters by folding the tab and gluing to the pages. When the glue is dry, fold the character back and turn the page. Continue adding pop-up objects to each page.
