How to Describe a Rectangle Prism

Teaching geometry can be a challenging task since in many cases students have not yet been exposed to the properties of three-dimensional shapes. Starting with a simple rectangular prism is a good way to teach students the basic characteristics of 3-D shapes without overwhelming them. Begin by describing the simple features of a rectangular prism and gradually build toward the more complicated features. After describing each characteristic, invite your students to measure or count for themselves. Once your students have a grasp of rectangular prisms, progress toward more complicated shapes such as hexagonal prisms.

Instructions

    • 1

Explain that a rectangular prism has six faces.

    • 2

Note that all of the faces of the prism are rectangles. Explain that opposite faces are always of equal dimensions.

    • 3

Explain that a rectangular prism always has eight vertices. Have your students count the number of vertices on an illustration or model of a rectangular prism.

    • 4

Explain that a rectangular prism always has 12 edges. Have your students count the number of edges on an illustration or model of a rectangular prism.

    • 5

Describe all of the angles of the rectangular prism as right angles. If you have not done so already, explain to your students that a right angle has 90 degrees. Have them measure the angles of an illustrated rectangular prism using a protractor, if desired.
