How to Describe Dependability

Early education teachers often present a unit or lesson on character to teach young children about the personal qualities and attributes toward which they should strive as they develop through childhood, adolescence and adulthood. For instance, teachers may present to students the characteristic of "dependability," which is exhibited by consistency. The term "dependability" has different connotations --- all of which must be described to explain the concept adequately.

Instructions

    • 1

Define the term "dependability." The term comprises the words "depend" and "ability," but it does not mean the ability to depend --- rather, it means the ability to be depended upon. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, dependability is "worthiness as the recipient of another's trust or confidence."

    • 2

Provide synonyms for dependability, such as "reliableness," "trustworthiness" and "creditability." Describe dependability by defining what it is not. Provide antonyms of dependability, such as "questionableness," "uncertainness" and "dubiousness."

    • 3

Emphasize that dependability is exhibited by persons, things or phenomena that are constant and consistent in action or behavior. Reinforce that although the term is often applied to people to describe personal characteristics, you can also apply the term to concepts or laws. For instance, a formula used to project infant growth or development may be described as having dependability.

    • 4

Provide diverse examples of dependability. For instance, a person who has never missed a day of school or work exhibits dependability. Likewise, a dog that always reacts to stimuli with the same behavior exhibits dependability. Parents also demonstrate dependability because children can rely on them to meet their physical and emotional needs.

    • 5

Explain why dependability is important if you are teaching about the value of personal characteristics. For instance, explain that dependability provides people with a sense of security and comfort. Emphasize that dependability forms the basis of trust and close relationships.
