How to Hook Students Into Literacy

Getting your students hooked into literacy is usually more a matter of encouraging a natural love of learning than actual teaching. By facilitating a love of literacy in your students, you are fostering their academic growth, which is the primary goal of any quality teacher. Reading and writing are two skills your students use most often in their lives. Literacy skills will improve your students' overall communication and logical thinking skills, as well as promote their creativity.

Instructions

    • 1

Set aside time to read aloud to your students or for your students to read independently every day.

    • 2

Encourage reading at home by allowing your students to check books out of the classroom overnight.

    • 3

Allow your students to choose their own books as often as possible. This ensures the students' interest in the books they are reading.

    • 4

Discuss with your students the books they are reading. Relate the stories to their lives when applicable, and ask open-ended questions, such as "Why do you think the main character acted the way that he did?"

    • 5

Assign open-ended projects for your students to complete based on the books they have read.

    • 6

Organize free writing journaling time for your students each day. The purpose of these journals is to foster a love of writing. Therefore these journals should be read by the teacher, but not graded.

    • 7

Allow students to read or write whenever they finish other tasks early.
