How to Be a Positive Role Model for Students

Role models may find themselves staring in the mirror while wondering how their students could possibly behave the way they do -- unaware of the answer that is right in front of them. While students find role models in and outside of school, teachers are in a unique position of authority and have relationships with their students, giving them the potential to positively -- or negatively -- influence their lives. All teachers can intentionally model positive behavior in their classrooms and become positive role models in their students' lives.

Instructions

    • 1

Tell the truth, keep your word, be consistent and be fair. Model positive behavior by example and through actions. Walk the talk. Students must feel that the positive attributes displayed are stable.

    • 2

Model good choice making. Allow students to see or watch you make proactive, solution-based decisions. Share with students your thought process or talk out loud as you work through problems. Help students understand how you solve problems and make good choices.

    • 3

Advocate for those less fortunate or weaker. Show that you are confident and selfless. Define a clear set of values and uphold these values at all times. Admit when you make mistakes and apologize.

    • 4

Promote open communication and be respectful of others at all times. Use a diplomatic and objective approach to dealing with conflict and when giving negative feedback to students. Encourage students to collaborate on projects and involve the community in school activities when possible.

    • 5

Demonstrate passion in your work and in life. Let students see that you have multiple interests and help them to see beyond your professional title to the human side. Inspire students through sharing and storytelling. Approach the day full of energy and spread that energy wherever you go.
