Set aside time to talk to students individually. This will allow you to fully understand the reason that they find school boring or do not care about their success. You need to have these conferences in order to formulate your game plan for motivating them.
Provide intrinsic motivation. This motivation is that which comes from the student, their desire to succeed. A partnership type of relationship can go a long way in achieving this. Allow students to choose options for learning and learning activities. If they feel that their opinion is valued and they have a choice, it can motivate them to care about school.
Provide external motivation. This is motivation to do well based on outside influences. Praise the student for a job well done or extra effort they put in. If the student is trying and it is rewarded with accolades, it will help them to try even harder the next time. External motivation can also come in the form or stickers for young students, candy for students who complete the daily homework, displaying their math problems on the board or being chosen to read out-loud. There are so many ways to recognize a student's effort.
Offer assistance to students who are struggling. A student who feels lost can lose the ability to care about school if he feels that no one cares about him. Offering tutoring or just to listen to his difficulties will allow him to feel important and more connected to class and school.
