Create a vocabulary list. Include all the terms concerning genetics that students will need to understand for the lessons you'll teach. Include the definition for each term. Pass this sheet out to students on a Friday so that they have the weekend to learn the terms effectively. Ask each student to copy each term onto a note card so that students can quiz one another at home. Require the students to turn in the note cards on Monday so that you know they did the work.
Give the students a quiz concerning the terms. Include all terms that were on the list. Create a quiz in which students are required to match terms to their definitions. Also consider creating a quiz in which students have to record the definition of the terms from memory. Warn students about the quiz before you give it so that they are sure to study for it.
Teach your genetics lesson. Use the terms that were on your vocabulary quiz often within the lesson. Ask students to tell you what the terms mean when you use them int he lesson. Call on students randomly to answer the questions. To ensure that your students are comprehending the lesson, ask questions in a random fashion that help the students piece together the information that you are presenting. Hand out worksheets that require students to write a short essay concerning one or even several of the terms that are on the list.
