The Average Reading Speed for Fourth Grade

The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) conducts periodic assessments of American students' abilities in all academic areas: science, writing, mathematics, geography, history, and reading. In 2005, NAEP issued a report entitled, "Fourth-Grade Students Reading Aloud: NAEP 2002 Special Study of Oral Reading," the purpose of which was to document in detail the abilities of fourth graders to read aloud with accuracy, speed, and fluency.
  1. Accuracy

    • The report measures accuracy as a percentage of words read aloud correctly. It showed about 75 perfect of students read the required passage with an accuracy rating of at least 95 percent.

    Rate

    • On average, the students read a 198 word passage in one minute, forty seconds. They averaged 119 words per minute.

    Fluency

    • The report defined fluency as expressiveness, adherence to syntax, and phrasing. It found about 60 percent of students were fluent, and about 10 percent scored at the top level.

    Correlation Between Skills

    • The study found a correlation between fluency, accuracy, and rate. Students who were less fluent tended to score below average on accuracy. Those who read at a faster rate tended to be more fluent on average.
