California Content Standards for the Fourth Grade

When teachers prepare their lessons, they design activities that meet state educational content standards. In California, as in other states, these standards address subject areas including language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. Fourth grade content standards include such specific skills as interpreting words with multiple meanings and using concepts of negative numbers.
  1. Language Arts

    • Fourth grade standards in the language arts address skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. Students are expected to become proficient in word analysis and fluent in oral and silent reading. They learn to comprehend grade-appropriate materials using varied strategies. Fourth grade students read a variety of works in children's literature, and analyze fiction in terms of plot, setting, theme and characters. Teachers provide activities to encourage students to compare stories and identify figurative language like metaphors and personification. Students learn to write clearly with paragraphs that have a central idea. They use the writing process of prewriting, producing a draft, revising and editing. Fourth graders are expected to listen critically, respond appropriately, and demonstrate basic computer skills.

    Mathematics

    • Fourth grade students are taught to add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers, and compare fractions and decimals. They are also expected to learn algebra and functions by interpreting variables and using symbols to simplify expressions. Lesson plans encourage students to use formulas and manipulate equations. In the area of measurement and geometry, students learn perimeter and area interpret points on a grid and identify geometric terms like parallel and prism. Students learn to predict probability, and solve mathematical problems.

    Social Studies

    • Fourth graders study the history of the state of California by investigating its geography, immigration, growth and pre-Columbian roots. They participate in activities designed to show the relationship between the state and the federal government. Students learn abut coordinates of latitude and longitude and identify bodies of water around the state, including the Pacific Ocean, using maps. Students are expected to describe the history of the state and how events affected the economic situation. They learn about the role of the Gold Rush and the Pony Express in the development of the state. In fourth grade students also study the United States Constitution and discuss the powers of government at various levels.

    Science

    • Science standards spell out what fourth graders should know about the physical sciences and life sciences. They study the design of circuits, build a compass and an electromagnet, and study electrical energy. Fourth graders learn that organisms need energy and matter in order to live, and the role of plants in the food chain. They also learn about recycling matter from dead plants and animals.
