There are a number of lesson plans that can be developed under the personal rubric. Explain the concept of setting personal goals. Have the students individually write down five goals. Review them as a class and make a list of common ones. Develop lesson plans around pair and group activities looking at short, mid-range and long term goals. Work on the idea of continuity, benchmarks and assessments in the process.
Look at the family decision making process. Assign the students group work around the concept of how families come to an agreement about making decisions -- such as where to go on vacation, whether a new car is needed -- and have them evaluate whether or not it is an effective process they want to take with them as they work through their transitions to adulthood. There is considerable scope on this topic, and subsequent lessons can be structured around the data and topics that comes out of the first lesson.
Students, particularly those with disabilities, need information and guidance on career choices that are available to them. Invite a guidance counselor to give a presentation on vocational choices. Another lesson plan is a field trip to the local technical school or community college. Link the lesson plans back to having students write reports on careers that interest them. Ask them to give concrete examples of why they feel they are suited to work in that particular area.
Transitions into the community involve making life choices such as where to open a bank account, whether or not you are responsible enough to have a credit card and where you would like to live when you leave home. Additional lesson plans could focus on topics such as setting up a budget and applying for part-time jobs to help with expenses while studying. Another transition lesson plan is how to write a resume, a practical skill all students need to develop.
