Making an Invitation With Second Grade Students

When working with a second grade class, it is important to keep your student’s families both informed and involved with their child’s schooling. Inviting parents, grandparents and siblings into the classroom for different events, holidays and learning activities is one way to keep the family involved. Second grade students can practice writing skills and make their own invitations to invite their parents to an upcoming class event. Making invitations with students will help them focus on who the audience is and understand what is needed to formally send an invitation.

Instructions

    • 1

Give each student a piece of stationary and an envelope. If desired, construction paper or colored cardstock paper can be substituted for fancy stationary.

    • 2

Offer suggestions to each student about what to include on the invitation. For example, he should include the what, when, where and why information related to the event.

    • 3

Start the invitation off with a personal greeting, for example, “Dear mom and dad,” or “To my dearest grandma.”

    • 4

Fill in the information for the date, time and location. For example, “Friday, October 15 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the school’s garden.”

    • 5

Write about what the event is all about, for example, “The afternoon tea and read event will include some fresh tea and homemade cookies, plus I will show you how well I can read.”

    • 6

Add any additional information not previously included on the invitation, including if there will be snacks served, will there be any guest speakers and if volunteers are needed to help with the event.

    • 7

Read the invitation with the student and ask her if the invitation is complete. If it is not, have her fill in the left-out information.
